Belfort is sentenced to four years of minimum security prison with tennis courts and swimming pools. Two years later, Belfort is arrested after one of his former associates snitches on him. Belfort decides to retire after this near-death event. They then make a ill-advised yacht trip to Switzerland, where their boat crashes in the sea. His aunt-in-law has a heart attack while Belfort, Azoff, and their wives are in Italy. After being confronted by Denham, Belfort proceeds to hide his money in a confidential Swiss bank account in his aunt-in-law's name. Although the scam was successful at first, the FBI and investigator Patrick Denham begin to be suspicious of Stratton Oakmont. This leads to Stratton Oakmont enacting the complex and fraudlent intial public offering of Steve Madden shoes.

Despite all of this money, Jordan and his coworkers want to achieve even higher levels of wealth. Belfort and his associates discover vast amount of riches. Belfort befriends Donnie Azoff and others and start their own financial firm, Stratton Oakmont. Belfort then finds a job selling penny stocks to unsuspecting clients, and his coworkerss quickly discover his ability to smooth talk clients into financial decisions. The next day, the stock market crashes and Belfort is out of a job. Belfort quickly learns that the financial world is not what he expected. The story begins with a young innocent Jordan Belfort fresh out of college and ready to begin his career on Wall Street. The Wolf of Wall Street follow the saga of Jordan Belfort and his associates as they traverse the lavish lifestyle of Wall Street bankers.
